Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA)

ATTENTION POTENTIAL GTAs: Please refrain from contacting professors (by phone, email, or in person) about applying or the status of your application; it only delays us further in completing the hiring process and may be seen negatively by some faculty members. Instead, please solely rely on applying through the appropriate channel, identified below.

The department hires approximately 55 GTAs each semester, and receives about 140 applications. Further, many of the 55 positions are filled by GTAs who previously held them, so the number of new positions per semester is sometimes closer to 10. We can only hire a small number of GTAs from the large collection of talented candidates. Good luck with your application!

If you would like to apply for a GTA position with us, please read the following carefully:

  1. All GTAs hired for a given semester must attend a Mandatory IST Return-to-Work Attendance & GTA Contract Signing Session.
    Fall 2017 GTAs – Monday, August 14, 2017
    Spring 2018 GTAs – Thursday, January 11, 2018
The mandatory session will be held at the Fairfax Campus, Engineering Building. No GTA will be excused from attending this meeting for any reason.
  2. IST GTAs must be registered for courses in a graduate program within Volgenau School of Engineering.
  3. All new International GTAs (Grading and Lab) who were required to take an English proficiency exam for admission into George Mason must participate and sufficiently perform in a language proficiency assessment (CELTD) administered by INTO Mason’s Learning Resource Center prior to starting their first GTA as instructor of record or GL assignment.  INTO Mason is located in Room 1305 in the Global Center (formerly, the Mason Inn), website www.intostudy.com/mason.  The Classroom English Language Teaching Demonstration(CELTD) will be recorded and reviewed by two qualified evaluators.  Students who fail to pass the CELTD may retake the assessment after they have completed a minimum of 10 hours of targeted instruction to improve their pronunciation and/or fluency in English.  You can schedule CELTD or your tutoring appointment at https://intomason.mywconline.com.  Students are advised to contact Kathleen Rossell (krossell@gmu.edu) for more information.
  4. Applying for a GTA position in no way assures you of a position in our department.
  5. Applications are accepted until all positions are filled. There is no application deadline.
  6. You will be contacted ONLY if there is interest in an interview.

To apply for a position as a GTA, all available positions are now posted on the Career Services’ HireMason web site. You can create an account, login, and apply for any GTA position for which you are qualified.
