Clarification: Concentration Gateway Courses

As mentioned previously, the IST faculty have voted to implement some Concentration changes beginning in Fall 2016. During the past couple of weeks we have discussed how to best implement these changes.  The following has been decided:

The new policy that students must earn a “B” or better in their Concentration Gateway Course will be applied to students who are in the Fall 2016 catalog and subsequent catalog years.  If you are in the Fall 2015 catalog or earlier catalog years, this policy will not apply to you.  You can continue to pursue your current concentration and will not need to retake your Gateway Course even if you have earned less than a “B” in it.  If you have not yet taken your Gateway Course or declared your concentration, you can earn a “C” in your Gateway Course and still pursue your desired concentration.

However, please note the following important information.  Beginning with Fall 2016 registration, Patriot Web will not allow you to register for your concentration courses if you received less than a “B” in your Gateway Course.  As such, you will need to request an override for each concentration course you wish to register for.  Override requests can be submitted on our website, and you can submit your requests prior to your registration day/time.  We will send a reminder email prior to Fall 2016 registration so that you can submit your request in advance.  Just to be clear: You can take your concentration courses, but you will need an override in order to register.  As always, you must have at least a “C” in any course that is a prerequisite for another course, so you cannot take concentration courses if you have a “C-“ or “D” in the Gateway Course.

All other prerequisite changes announced in the previous email remain in place for ALL students.  As a reminder, those changes were as follows:

As of Fall 2016, ALL of the following will be prerequisites for IT 492:

  • Senior standing
  • Declared as an IT/AIT student
  • IT 206
  • IT 207
  • IT 213
  • IT 214
  • IT 223
  • IT 341
  • IT 343
  • MSOM/MBUS 300

Bridge Course Changes

Bridge Courses (IT 191, IT 193, IT 194, and IT 196) will receive letter grades instead of being credit/no credit, and as a result, these grades will affect overall GPA.  This change will go into effect beginning with the January 2017 offerings.  The Bridge Courses in January 2016 and Summer 2016 will remain credit/no credit.

IT 300 will become a corequisite for IT 341.

Additional change: MATH 108 (or MATH 113 if you take it instead of MATH 108) will become a corequisite for IT 102. Students will no longer need a placement exam score for IT 102.
