IT Major and IT Minor Changes for the Fall 2018 Semester

Hello, all! Below is a list of changes for the upcoming fall 2018 catalog. 

NOTE: Pre and Co requisites are tied to the semester a course is taught, not to a student’s individual catalog year.

 

  1. IT 207 will be a co-requisite with IT 369. This means that students may now take IT 207 and IT 369 concurrently, starting fall 2018.
  2. We are introducing two new courses: IT 109 and IT 209. Students will now have the option to take (IT 106 and IT 206) OR (IT 109 and IT 209) for the BS IT core requirements. IT 106 and IT 206 will use JAVA; IT 109 and IT 209 will use PYTHON.
    • If you have completed IT 106 PYTHON, you will need to submit an override request form at ist.gmu.edu/go/override in order to register for IT 209. Please include the semester you took IT 106.
    • If you have completed IT 106 JAVA, you will not be permitted to take IT 209. You must take IT 206.
    • Students who have attempted IT 106 twice may not take IT 109 for the third attempt; students who have attempted IT 109 twice may not take IT 106 for the third attempt.
    • Students who have attempted IT 206 twice may not take IT 209 for a third attempt; students who have attempted IT 209 twice may not take IT 206 for the third attempt.
    • IT 109 will be added as one of the prerequisite courses for: IT 207, IT 209, IT 216, IT 331, IT 341, IT 342, IT 465, IT 495, IT 496.
    • IT 209 will be added as one of the prerequisite courses for: IT 315, IT 366, IT 466, IT 492
    • UPDATE TO DECLARATION CRITERIA: Mason students considering a change of major to Information Technology must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 in all completed 100 and 200 level IT foundation and core courses completed at Mason that are required for the major, and a grade of C or better in IT 106 Introduction to IT Problem Solving Using Computer Programming or IT 109 Introduction to Computer Programming. Grades in approved foundation and core substitution courses taken at Mason will be included.
  3. IT 293 and IT 343 will now be restricted to declared majors only. If you are an IT minor or non-IT major, you will not be permitted to take IT 293 or IT 343.
  4. IT MINOR CHANGES:
    • In order to declare the IT Minor, students must meet the following criteria: Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in completed 100 and 200 level IT core and foundation courses, and a minimum C in IT 106 or IT 109.
      • The courses used to calculate the IT GPA for the purposes of declaration are: (IT 102 or MATH 125), IT 104, IT 105, (IT 106 or IT 109), (IT 206 or IT 209), IT 207, IT 213, IT 214, IT 216, IT 223.
      • If students complete CS 112 and CS 211 with minimum C’s, these will be substituted for (IT 106 or IT 109) and (IT 206 or IT 209).
    • IT 304 will no longer be an IT Minor Technical Focus course.
    • In order to graduate with the IT Minor, students must have a minimum C in all IT courses applied to the IT Minor.
