Justin D. Maddox is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Information Sciences and Technology.

Prof. Maddox is a counterterrorism and “adversarial media” expert. He currently serves as the CEO of Inventive Insights LLC and works closely with the Global Engagement Center for the U.S. State Department where he previously served as the Deputy Coordinator. A U.S. Army veteran, Prof. Maddox has led counterterrorism activities at the CIA, the State Department, DHS, NNSA, and was a U.S. Army Psychological Operations Team Leader.

He has regularly advised the White House and Congress on counterterrorism issues and has an insightful, honed perspective on U.S. and foreign interests, capabilities, and the future landscape of the intelligence field. Prof. Maddox is the author of numerous articles and counterterrorism strategies, including “Lessons from the Information War“, 2019, “The Tragedy of the Mass-Shooter Algorithm,” Lawfare, 2018 and “How to Start a War: Eight Cases of Strategic Provocation,” Narrative and Conflict, 2016.

He also co-authored the National Counter-ISIL Communications Strategy in 2016 and the National Nuclear and Radiological Homeland Security Strategy in 2003. Prof. Maddox was a 2007 finalist for the DNI’s Galileo Award, recognizing innovative and creative solutions to the United States future intelligence challenges, for his work on the rapid assimilation of intelligence officers.

Since 2011, Prof. Maddox has taught National Security Challenges at George Mason University, a graduate-level course, requiring students to devise realistic solutions to key strategic threats. Additional teaching engagements have included Georgetown University, New York University, National Defense University, the Foreign Service Institute, and more.

Prof. Maddox holds an M.A. from Georgetown University’s National Security Studies Program and a B.A. in liberal arts from St. John’s College. He has lived and worked in Iraq, India, and Germany, and can order a drink in Russian, Urdu and German.
