Myeong Lee is an assistant professor in the Department of Information Sciences and Technology. His research is mostly about data science for social good, which aims to solve social problems through data-driven approaches. He is particularly interested in understanding the dynamics of cities, local communities, and local information inequality. For his research program, he develops and leverages social theories and computational methods. Also, he designs and implements systems that demonstrate the geographically-embedded structures of information and associated issues.

His academic experiences include, but are not limited to, a Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) Summer Fellowship at the University of Washington’s eScience Institute in 2016, a DSSG Summer Fellowship at Georgia Tech in 2017, a Junior Fellowship at the Center for the Advanced Study of Communities and Information (CASCI) in the University of Maryland’s iSchool, being a research assistant at the Digital Curation Innovation Center (DCIC), and also a research affiliate at the Platial Analysis Lab in the McGill University.

In the professional world, he was a Data Science & Technology Fellow at The Center for Open Data Enterprise, a non-profit based in Washington D.C. that advocates for open data movements, where he led the development of the Open Data Impact Map and advised the SDG National Reporting Initiative on technological strategy. Before that, he was a co-founder and Director of Software Development at Torooc Inc., a VC-funded emotional robot start-up, based in South Korea.
