Transferring from Another Institution
Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) Students
VCCS Students interested in transferring to Mason should first contact their VCCS advisors/counselors, as they are trained to help students know which paths are the best to take in the VCCS system to transfer to Mason.
To help students decide which courses they would like to take to transfer to Mason, we have provided a helpful guide of how courses will transfer to Mason from the VCCS system, in the chart below. Be sure to communicate with your VCCS advisors to discuss each semester’s course options.
The only office authorized to evaluate transcripts and verify how courses are accepted is the Transfer Admissions office. Their office and website have many resources available to help students determine how prior institution’s credits could be accepted at Mason.
- Transfer Credit Policy: https://www2.gmu.edu/admissions-aid/how-apply/transfer/transfer-credit-policy
- Transfer Credit Matrix: http://admissions.gmu.edu/transfer/transferCreditSearch.asp

- **If a student has a lower level substitution for an upper level course, they will need to still earn a minimum of 45-upper level credits in order to graduate. A student may opt to take their Mason Core courses as upper level (300/400 level) credits, declare a second concentration, declare a minor, or take general electives at the upper level in order to satisfy this requirement.
- ENG 125 will continue to transfer to fulfill the Mason Core literature requirement until 2025.
